Following the footsteps of Mary Wells

Travel back in time over 100 years and follow the footsteps of Mary Wells, a cook at Summerdown Camp. Using her diaries as inspiration, discover the effect she and over 150,000 wounded soldiers had on Eastbourne during the First World War. From the unusual welcome she received at the train station to the trials and tales from the women working with wounded soldiers at the biggest convalescent camp in Britain, find out about one of Eastbourne’s extraordinary women. This walk will start at Eastbourne train station, walk through Gildredge Park, down Summerdown Road, around Compton Drive and Old Camp Road.

Starting Point: Eastbourne Train Station BN21 3QJ

Finishing Point: 63 Summerdown Road, BN20 8DQ

Walk Grading: Easy – Less than 2 miles with no steep ascent/descent

Maximum number of walkers: 20

Pay and Display parking is available at Eastbourne Train Station

Plenty of public transport is available to the starting point of this walk including most Stagecoach and Brighton & Hove Buses. From the finishing point, the Brighton & Hove bus will run from East Dean Road (a short walk) every 10 minutes, back into the town centre.

There is no café on route
