East Dean to Friston Forest

Starting at East Dean we walk through Birling Farm (the old Sheep Centre) to Cornish Farm and Horseshoe Plantation and then along the lower path to Birling Gap for coffee at the National Trust Visitor Centre. Then onto Went Hill to Friston. Through Friston Forest, crossing the road at New Barn. Visit site of Friston Aerodrome and Exceat Church. Lunch at Seven Sisters Country Park Visitor Centre (picnic or cafe) (6.5 miles), where walkers not wanting to walk all day can catch a bus back to East Dean. Afterwards we walk to Westdean, where King Alfred is said to have had a Palace, visiting the Norman Church before returning through Friston Forest to East Dean. A walk with plenty of interest and lots of fantastic views.

Starting Point: East Dean Car Park, Gilberts Drive, East Dean, BN20 0DJ

Finishing Point: Same as starting point

Walk Grading: Strenuous – Over 5 miles and may have stretches of steep ascent/descent

Maximum number of walkers: 25

Parking is available for free at the exact starting point

Accessible on the Brighton & Hove 12 buses in either direction, from Eastbourne the suggested bus is the 9:30am bus from Gildredge Road, bus stop F.
