Compton Place Tour

25 September, 2019 @ 3:00 pm 5:00 pm

A tour around Compton Place. This is the only Grade 1 listed building in Eastbourne and was the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire until 1953 when the 10th Duke died in the grounds. Since then the house and grounds has been let by the family as a language school. It is not open to the public and the visit will take place while children/students are still in residence. However, most of the classes will have finished by 3:30pm and so the first half an hour will be spent walking the grounds and then enter the house at 3:30pm. The walk will include all the principal rooms which the family previously occupied together with ‘below stairs’.

Approximate Distance: Less than a mile (Tour)

Starting Point: The entrance to Compton Place is via Compton Place Road. There are signs outside for LTC Language School and Chatsworth Settlement Trustees. Enter the main drive and walk to an old Martello Tower cannon where the driveway splits. Bear left and parking is available on either side of this part of the drive. Walk towards the kitchen courtyard entrance but there is also to the left another courtyard, which is the stable courtyard. The estate office can be found in this courtyard.

Finishing Point: Front of Compton Place

Walk Grading: Easy – Less than 2 miles with no steep ascent/descent

Maximum number of walkers: 30
